Hi! I'm Laurie. I'm an artist and illustrator living in Shrewsbury, in beautiful Shropshire.
I draw and paint animal and human portraits, and I illustrate for picture books. I spent years tussling over which of these I should eventually focus on. But I think both practices to me feel like two sides of the same coin, and I cannot do one without also doing the other.

In my artwork I am fascinated by the animal kingdom, and the way that the stories of humans and our animal relatives are intertwined. We can learn so much about ourselves by learning more about them. I try to capture the character of the animals I draw, and explore their relationship with us. Whether it be scales, feathers or fur, the animal kingdom is a constant source of inspiration in colour and texture. I love to look at the world through the eyes of an animal or child.
My earliest memory of creating my own art, is of painting a fox from a taxidermy model in our classroom at primary school. I can still remember his red fur, glassy eyes and bushy tail, the pleasure I took in his portrait and the pride I felt when it was hung on the wall. Painting and drawing still give me the same child like feeling, and the natural world still fascinates me. I wish I knew where that picture had gone!

I'm interested in how, many humans perceive ourselves as seperate from nature, yet also continue to encroach on it. I want to do some good for the world through my work. That's where my motivation is... to be a better artist, and through that, become a better human.
